Designing Playful Ad Experiences That Actually Work
Let’s face it—most digital ads get skipped. So how do you make someone stop, engage, and actually enjoy an ad?
That’s the challenge I tackled: transforming static brand impressions into interactive moments by embedding simple, intuitive games into ad formats.
The goal? Make ads feel like mini-games that users want to play, not skip.
The Creative Strategy
My approach blended game mechanics with brand storytelling. Each ad format was designed to:
Deliver a clear reward loop (play > engage > earn)
Feel familiar, yet visually flexible to carry different brand assets
Prioritise low-friction interaction—just tap, swipe, or drag
Inspired by retro ‘90s aesthetics and arcade minimalism, I animated each concept to simulate real mobile environments.
Think: bright color palettes, pixel-style motion, and satisfying feedback.
Design Thinking in action
Beyond game mechanics, I treated each ad like a micro product experience:
User-first logic: Fast loading, intuitive UI, zero learning curve
Feedback loops: Points, coupons, visual wins
Scalability: Placeholder shapes made every game brand-ready without full rebuilds
This approach made the formats instantly adaptable to a wide variety of use cases—from FMCG and beverages to education and fitness apps.
Format Design as Modular UX Components
Each game format was treated like a modular UX component—adaptable across campaigns, brands, and devices.
It balanced cognitive engagement and brand visibility—from memory recall to visual-motor coordination.

A branded ray gun takes center stage, letting users blast away incoming objects. Fast feedback and high-impact visuals make this perfect for product-focused storytelling.

Users launch colored bubbles to clear matching groups—creating a satisfying cause-and-effect loop. Great for color-based brand reveals or seasonal campaigns.

A lightweight word puzzle powered by hints and images—perfect for mental stimulation, brand recall, and repeat interactions. Think of it as mini Scrabble meets visual trivia.

Pair it, play it, remember it.
A memory-based match game that boosts cognitive recall and visual association. Ideal for showcasing product variants or thematic brand stories.
Spin the wheel
Luck meets loot.
A chance-based mechanic that adds surprise and anticipation—ideal for coupons, offers, or mystery brand reveals.
Stack
Swipe, stack, and don’t drop the blocks—literally.
A playful dexterity challenge that rewards timing and rhythm. Great for continuous play loops and satisfying “almost made it!” moments.
Puzzle
Think fast, solve smart.
This format invites users to complete bite-sized puzzles inside the ad space—boosting cognitive engagement and extending time spent with branded content.
Crusher
Crush it, clear it, win it.
A candy crush -inspired match game where users pair and pop colorful items to score. It’s a tactile dopamine hit that encourages replay and completion.
Pacman
Navigate the maze, escape the ghosts.
A nostalgic maze-runner mechanic that blends classic gameplay with modern visuals—great for retro-inspired or pop culture-driven brand campaigns.
Slots
Spin to win.
With a single tap, users spin reels to match symbols and unlock rewards. It’s fast, familiar, and perfect for offer-based or reveal-driven experiences.
Successful Game Conversions Using These Formats
By focusing on gamified UX and playful storytelling, these formats consistently outperformed traditional ad types across engagement and conversion metrics. Brands loved how quickly they could visualize integration. Users stayed longer. Everyone won.
This project taught me:
Great advertising should feel like a product demo disguised as a dopamine hit.
UX micro-interactions can turn passive viewers into curious players.
Gamification, when done right, is less about gimmicks—and more about interactive storytelling.
